Rivaling the Kwid, the Maruti S-Presso is expected to stir the segment

Maruti S-Presso Launch

The Maruti Suzuki S-Presso has the car enthusiasts hooked since the time it was first showcased as a concept at the 2018 Indian Auto Expo. The Japanese carmaker has confirmed the launch date of the upcoming Maruti S-Presso as September 30, 2019. A teaser video of the car was also released with the announcement. There has been no official word on the Maruti S-Presso bookings.

As per India’s largest passenger carmaker, the name S-Presso gets inspiration from the famous coffee drink – Espresso. The teaser video shows a design sketch of the upcoming SUVish S-Presso. The design appears boxy with an outright stance. The front grille is kept slim, similar to the concept version. It gets twin pod headlamps and flared wheel arches for that bulgy SUV look. The A and B pillars feature regular width, however, the D-pillar appears broad. It might not be as wide as the Ignis but appears to be definitely wider than its Alto cousins, Wagon R and Celerio.

Rumours are ripe about its variant names which could be standard, Lxi, Vxi and Vxi+. It will be powered by the 998cc, 3-cylinder petrol engine doing duties under the Alto K10. The maximum power output of this engine is 67 bhp at 5,500 rpm. Just like its rest of the lineup, Maruti Suzuki is expected to offer the S-Presso with either 5-speed manual or 5-speed AMT gearbox.

With the charm of SUVs on an all-time high, buyers with limited budget too want something which may not be an SUV but should at least give a feel of the same. The overnight success of the Kwid from a fairly newer brand Renault at that point of time seconds this fact.

Will the new lad from Maruti Suzuki be able to give competition to the entry-level SUV star Renault Kwid? The pricing and the initial word of mouth would be the key aspects which will decide its fate in our country.
