Overview

Jeep Compass
Jeep did not have a very strong start in the Indian market but with a small compact SUV- Jeep Compass, the American carmaker managed to turn things around for itself. Bookings for Jeep Compass crossed the mark of 12000 units in the four months of its launch and went on to become one of the most successful offerings by FCA in India. In the following review, we will look at what makes Jeep Compass one of the most popular cars by Jeep India.

Price List

Jeep Compass is a premium SUV and therefore features a premium price tag. With advanced features and powerful powerplants the car rival’s other offerings in the 7-seater segment like Tata Hexa, Mahindra XUV 500, Toyota Fortuner amongst others. Jeep Compass is available in 11 variants and the price for the base 1.4L Sport Petrol model starts from Rs. 15.16 Lakh. The top-end Trailhawk Model is priced at Rs. 24 Lakh.

Dimensions

In terms of the overall dimensions, Jeep Compass sits between Hyundai Creta and Hyundai Tucson. Even though this is just a 5-seater, considering its dimensions there will be a plenty of cabin space for the occupants. With 178 mm of ground clearance we do not expect Jeep Compass to take on major off-roading duties but it should fare well as a soft roader.

Dimensions Model name
Length 4395mm
Width 1818mm
Height 1640mm
Wheelbase 2636mm
Ground clearance 178mm
Boot space 408 litres
Fuel tank capacity 60 litres

Interior

Stepping inside the Jeep Compass’ cabin, we find a lot of soft feel textures, some chrome finish bits, leather and all in all the car manages to give us a decent feel for it surfaces. It still doesn’t qualify for luxury standards courtesy of the incorporation of hard shiny plastic bits and absence of certain creature comforts.

Engine and Transmission

Jeep Compass is available with two engine options. The petrol power plant comes mated to an automatic transmission gearbox whereas the automatic option is not available on the diesel model. The petrol motor produces 160 bhp of peak power output and 200 NM of torque whereas the diesel mill manages to produce 10 bhp extra and the power output stands at 170 bhp and 350 Nm of torque.

Type Petrol Diesel

Fuel Economy

The ARAI claimed fuel economy of Jeep Compass’ petrol variant is 16.3 kmpl and the fuel economy stat for the diesel model stands at 17.1 kmpl

Variant Petrol Diesel
Fuel economy 16.3kmpl 17.1kmpl

Features

Jeep Compass’ is offered with Android Auto and Apple CarPlay. The top-of-the-line variant also gets a 7-inch touchscreen, but the interface is not very responsive. The touch screen panel also doubles as the climate control system. Compass SUV only gets a digital compass and there is no satellite navigation offered on board. Voice recognition is not very refined if you intend on making any phone calls but work well for the audio player and the air-conditioning control. Also, on offer is a 6-speaker sound system which has good depth notes. It should also be noted that some standard creature comforts expected of premium SUVs like cruise control, sunroof, auto dimming mirrors and automatic headlights and wipers are a miss in the Jeep Compass

Safety

As far as safety is concerned Jeep Compass gets ESP, panic brake assist, ABS, hydraulic booster failure compensation, electronic brake, six airbags and electronic roll mitigation. Fair enough in the price tag it is offered!
