All-New Kia Sportage Unveiled, Gets Extensive Visual Changes In and Out

After much speculations, Kia has lifted off the covers from the all-new fifth generation model of one of its global best sellers, the Sportage. The new Kia Sportage wears a completely new design language on the outside as well as inside compared to the model it has replaced, and will be available with both petrol and diesel powertrains.

Based on Kia’s new global deign language ‘Opposites United’, the new Kia Sportage wears a huge black finished grille spread across the width of the front fascia. The headlamps, which do get boomerang-shaped daytime running LEDs, are placed adjacent to the sides of the grille, and are Matrix LED units.

Depending on different variants in which it will be made available, the Kia Sportage sits on 17-inch, 18-inch or 19-inch wheels. The side and rear profiles of the new Kia Sportage do sport curved designs for the window waistline and LED tail lamps with light bar on the boot lid respectively. Kia will also bring in a more rugged looking X-Line variant at a later stage.

The biggest highlight of the cabin of the all new Kia Sportage happens to the huge 12-inch curved HD display behind the steering wheel. This curved screen incorporates two different full TFT screens for instrument console and infotainment system, with the latter being touch sensitive and featuring OTA updates for navigation. The cabin of the new Kia Sportage also gets a long list of details like soft touch switches on center console, wireless phone charger, drive mode selector and more.

On offer in the all new Kia Sportage are two different powertrain options. Firstly, there is a 1.6-liter four-cylinder turbocharged petrol engine on offer, which puts up 177 bhp of power and 265 Nm of torque and is available with both the options of a 6-speed manual and 7-speed dual clutch automatic gearbox.

There is also a 2.0-liter four-cylinder diesel engine, which makes 183 bhp of power and 416 Nm of torque, and is being offered with an 8-speed automatic gearbox as standard. Kia also has plans to bring in hybrid and plug-in hybrid engine options for the Sportage at a later stage.

The new Kia Sportage comes with a whole new suite of electronic driving aids, which include an advanced Terrain mode which automatically alters the suspension settings depending on the tarmac conditions, new electric control suspension featuring real-time changes in damping control and an electronic four-wheel drive system, the last one of which will be available at a later stage.

The new Kia Sportage shares its underpinnings with the new Hyundai Tucson, and measures 4,660 mm long, 1,865 mm wide and 1,660 mm tall. It also has 2,755 mm of wheelbase and 637 liters of boot space.

The extensive list of safety features present in the all new Kia Sportage include front, side and curtain airbags as well as advanced driver assistance system (ADAS), which consists the likes of blind-spot collision avoidance assist (BCA), remote parking assist (RSPA), blind spot view monitor (BVM) and navigation based smart cruise control (NSCC).

2022 Kia Sportage: Will it come to India?

At present, Kia has no plans of bringing in the Sportage to the Indian shores, and will continue meeting the strong demand for its popular SUVs, the Sonet and Seltos, apart from the Carnival MPV. Kia is also reportedly working on an all new midsize seven seater SUV for the Indian car market, as its next big launch.
