A few weeks after listing it on its official website, Volvo has finally announced the pricing of the XC40 Recharge all-electric SUV. Available in a single fully-loaded variant, the new Volvo XC40 Recharge has been priced at Rs 55.90 lakh (ex-showroom, India0, making it one of the most affordable luxury EVs in India.
Like its petrol-powered counterpart, the new Volvo XC40 Recharge is locally assembled at Volvo’s production facility in Bengaluru, which makes it the first-ever locally-manufactured luxury EV in India. However, compared to the turbo-petrol-powered XC40, the Recharge all-electric version is Rs 11.40 lakh pricier. Volvo will start taking bookings of the XC40 Recharge exclusively on its official website from 27th July at a booking amount of Rs 50,000.
2022 Volvo XC40 Recharge – Exterior
As expected, the new Volvo XC40 Recharge shares its exterior design with the petrol-powered XC40, but with some EV-specific alterations like a closed grille and aerodynamically-enhanced design for the 19-inch dual-tone alloy wheels and front bumper. It continues to retain XC40’s traditional elements like all-LED headlamps with Thor hammer-shaped daytime running LEDs. While it is 15mm longer than the petrol-powered XC40, it also has a lower ground clearance of 175mm. Apart from the 452 litres boot space at the back, the XC40 Recharge also gets a 31-litre ‘frunk’.

On the inside too, the Volvo XC40 Recharge shares a lot with the petrol-powered version of the XC40, including the portrait-styled touchscreen infotainment system operating on software developed by Android. This new system has in-built Google Maps and Google Assistant, and one can operate several apps directly from Google Playstore. All these features are operable via an e-SIM onboard.
Other features in the Volvo XC40 Recharge, which are retained from the petrol-powered XC40, are a panoramic sunroof, level-2 autonomous driving assistance system package (ADAS), wireless phone charging and a full-TFT instrument console. It also gets powered front seats with memory function for the driver’s seat, a premium Harman Kardon music system and connected car tech.

2022 Volvo XC40 Recharge – Powertrain
The Volvo XC40 Recharge is available in India in the globally top-spec ‘Twin’ version, which comes with a dual electric motor setup, having one motor each on both front and rear axles. The combined power and torque outputs of these electric motors are 408 bhp and 660 Nm respectively. With these figures, the Volvo XC40 Recharge is capable of doing a 0-100 kmph sprint in 4.9 seconds. However, with a kerb weight of 2,188 kg, the XC40 Recharge is 400 kgs heavier than its petrol-powered counterpart.
The Volvo XC40 Recharge is also equipped with a 78 kWh lithium-ion battery, which delivers a range of 418 km (claimed on the WLTP cycle). This battery is compatible with 150 kW DC fast charging, using which one can charge this battery from 10-80 per cent in 33 minutes. Using a more accessible 50 kW fast charger, the battery can be charged from 0-100 per cent in 2.5 hours. However, the XC40 Recharge is offered with an 11 kW wall-box charger as standard.

2022 Volvo XC40 Recharge – Rivals
At present, the Volvo XC40 Recharge has no direct rivals in the electric compact SUV category. There are a few other all-electric luxury SUVs priced near it, such as Mini Cooper SE (hatchback), BMW i4 (four-door sedan) and Kia EV6 (grand touring crossover).
