2017 Ford EcoSport Facelift Review

Latest update: Ford EcoSport Storm was unveiled recently in Brazil. The rugged compact SUV boasts all round cladding, Ford Raptor-inspired grille and other off-road elements. In February 2018 sales, the new EcoSport surpassed the sales of the Tata Nexon. The American automaker has announced a price hike of 4 percent on its cars starting March. Launched last year, the new sub-compact SUV is offered with 1.5-litre petrol and diesel engine options in five variants – Ambiente, Trend, Trend+, Titanium, and Titanium+. The Ford EcoSport mileage is 17kmpl, 14.8kmpl and 23kmpl for petrol manual, petrol automatic and diesel versions. In India, it rivals the Tata Nexon, Maruti Vitara Brezza and the Honda WR-V.

Ford EcoSport 2017 Overview

Ford India has reintroduced it’s one of the bestselling EcoSport compact SUV in the Indian car market. The company wrote the biggest success story in their chapter when the EcoSport was first launched in the Indian auto industry in 2013. Ford is the pioneer of the compact SUV in the country. But since the launch of the EcoSport, many new contenders have come up in the same segment, making it tough for the EcoSport to survive. So, to keep the sales up and continue with the pace, EcoSport in 2015 was bestowed with minor outer and inner updates but that was not enough to beat the heat in the on-going competitive market. Now, Ford has come up with another ramped up version of EcoSport that would reinvigorate its position in the space. The Ford EcoSport facelift is based on the same platform as its predecessor but it does get mechanical and crucial design changes. Ford has launched the car with 5 different trim levels and will continue to house the same diesel motor underneath, but gets a different petrol motor with the facelift.

New Ford EcoSport Specifications

The new Ford EcoSport facelift is introduced with both diesel and petrol variants. A new 1.5-litre petrol engine replaces the previous 1.5-litre four-cylinder motor and the award-winning Ecoboost engine, singlehandedly. Part of Ford’s Dragon engine series, it can produce max power of 123 PS and a peak torque of 150 Nm. The motor is paired with a five-speed manual or a six-speed automatic transmission.

The compact SUV retains the same, 1.5L TDCi diesel of the previous model. The 1498cc 4-cylinder diesel engine delivers a power output of 100 PS at 3750 rpm, and max torque of 205 Nm at 1750-3250 rpm. It is linked to a five-speed manual transmission.

The 2017 Ford EcoSport with its new 1.5 liter three-cylinder Ti-VCT petrol engine gives 7% more fuel efficiency. The new mill has cantered spark plugs, crankshaft off-set from cylinder line and coil-on-plug system which results in better and faster engine start saving fuel and combustion. The new powertrain gives the fuel economy of 17 kmpl, its tried and tested 1.5 L TDCi diesel engine delivers the mileage of 23 kmpl while the EcoBoost mill offers an average of 18.9 kmpl.

Ford EcoSport 2017 comes with a fresh fascia with updated headlamps along with the signature light guide, refreshed bumpers with stylish curves. On the front, the chrome finished hexagonal grille has now been revamped with the blue oval finding the new center position same as in other members of the family. The front bumper has been completely redesigned with LED DRLs and squared off fog lamps. Though headlamps retain the shape of the outgoing model, but they are now bigger. The bonnet design is now sleek adding to the dynamic stance of the car. On the sides, the ORVMs with body coloured side indicators and door handles remain the same, while the addition of new 17-inch alloy wheels have definitely increased the outer masculine looks of the car. Moving to the rear, the car retains the same look except for the new design for the optional spare wheel cover.

On the inside, the cabin is the place where one can spot much difference. With all black cabin featuring leather upholstery, the first thing that comes to picture is the brilliant 8-inch floating touchscreen infotainment system. Yes, it’s a brilliant unit as the touch response is very snappy which is way better than the competition, while the visibility in sunlight is also good. The infotainment unit comes with SYNC 3 technology along with Android Auto and Apple CarPlay connectivity, which was expected from the facelift. But it lacks the navigation system, however, you can compensate that by plugging in your smartphone. Other connectivity options include 2 USB ports, two 12V sockets and Aux-In. Its lower variants – Trend and Trend+ – get a smaller 6.5-inch infotainment system. The dashboard has been perked up, lending the interiors a modern look. All other controls are well within the reach of the driver. It continues to have the dual-zone climatic control system of its predecessor.

Based on the consumer feedback, the seats of the new EcoSport have been refreshed. They are now wider and offer better cushioning. The boot volume of the new 2017 EcoSport has been increased by 30 litres and with the foldable rear seats functionality, the total volume can be increased to a whopping 1,178 litres.

Safety too has been uplifted as the car now comes with 6 airbags in the top model while the dual front airbags and ABS (anti-lock braking system) with EBD (Electronic brake-free distribution) are standard across the variants including the base trim. Overall, the American automaker has given an impressive upgrade to the interiors.

Other list of features include emergency brake light, door ajar warning, crash unlocking system, power door locks, engine immobiliser, seat belt reminder and front seat belts with pretensioner and load limiter. The list doesn’t ends here as EcoSport facelift also gets hill launch assist, traction control and cruise control in the automatic variants while safety features like rear view camera, cruise control and Ford’s Emergency Assistance system is reserved for the top-end variants.

Ford EcoSport 2017 Competitors

The new Ford EcoSport will compete against the likes of the Maruti Vitara Brezza, Tata Nexon and the Honda WR-V in the segment.

Verdict

In a nutshell, new EcoSport is a fine example of how customer feedback can help the engineers address the core issues. Though, there are minimal changes outside, the interior overhaul gives the new car a much needed boost to stand against the competition. Overall, the new EcoSport delivers well on most parameters, and now looks to unsettle the competition with its latest update.
