The lust for utility vehicles forced car manufacturers to come up with a range of SUVs in India. To enjoy the sub-4m advantage, a new category of subcompact SUVs emerged with the Ford EcoSport, which gave the value proposition of the typical SUV such as commanding driving position, high ground clearance and masculine looks at the cost of a premium hatch.

So, if you are in to shop for an SUV, which quenches your adventure-thirst without breaching the Rs 9 lakh mark, here are your options.

Hyundai Venue

Price: Rs 6.69 lakh – Rs 11.58 lakh (ex-showroom)

The most economical option among the best budget SUVs is the Hyundai Venue. The sub-4m SUV is highly acclaimed for its smart looks, connected tech and feature-rich cabin. It is available with three engine options – 1.2-litre petrol, 1.0-litre turbo petrol and a 1.5-litre diesel.

The regular petrol engine pumps out 83PS/114Nm, whereas, the turbo motor produces massive 120PS/171Nm. Contrarily, the diesel engine is good for 100PS/240Nm and gets only a 6-speed manual transmission. The turbo engine is available with either a 6-speed manual, iMT (clutchless with a manual shifter) or a 7-speed DCT transmission. The car is loaded to the brim with a plethora of features be it convenience or safety.

Definitely worth buying unless you have your other eye set on the upcoming Kia Sonet (based on Venue, topped with more frills).

Tata Nexon

Price: Rs 6.94 lakh – Rs 12.69 lakh (ex-showroom)

The styling was stepped up with the 2020 update as it got a new bonnet, sleeker headlamp and other interesting elements at the front. It now looks more SUV-like. The Nexon comes in 10 variants and two engine options.

The 1.2-litre turbocharged petrol engine produces 120PS/170Nm whereas the 1.5-litre turbocharged diesel puts out 110PS/260Nm. Both the engines are paired with either a 6-speed AMT or a 6-speed manual.

It gets features like tyre-pressure monitoring system, cruise control, 7-inch touchscreen unit and others.

Maruti Vitara Brezza

The Vitara Brezza is the third most economical option to go for. The petrol-only SUV is available in four variants and a single engine choice – 1.5-litre petrol motor. It belts out max power of 105PS and a peak torque of 138Nm. You can have it with either a 5-speed manual or a 4-speed automatic gearbox.

The sub-4m SUV too features a decent number of goodies such as 7-inch touchscreen unit, auto-dimming IRVM, dual-LED projector headlamps and others.

Ford EcoSport

Price: Rs 8.17 lakh – Rs 11.71 lakh (ex-showroom)

If you are looking for a car, which should neither have an in-your-face design nor a regular pattern, the Ford EcoSport should fit your bill.  The American car comes with two 1.5-litre engine choices –petrol and diesel. The petrol puts out max power of 122PS and 149Nm whereas the diesel motor is capable to churn 100PS and 215Nm. Both get 5-speed manual transmission as standard, however, the petrol also gets a 6-speed automatic option.

One of the safest cars in the competition, the EcoSport gets all the must-have features such as auto AC, auto projector headlamps, push-button start, sunroof and several more.

Maruti S-Cross

Price: Rs 8.39 lakh – Rs 12.39 lakh (ex-showroom)

If you have a budget close to 9 lakh, you have the option to go for the Maruti Suzuki S-Cross. In the price of a subcompact SUV, you get a proper crossover with macho styling. With the BS6 norm application, the S-Cross too shed its diesel heart and now becomes a petrol-only vehicle. The 1.5-litre petrol engine with SHVS mild-hybrid tech puts out 90PS and 200Nm. It can be had with either a 5-speed manual or a 4-speed automatic transmission.

Although it’s decently kitted, it misses out on connected car tech features of Venue or Seltos. It’s a balanced option to go for if you do not want to be a part of the sub-4m herd.

These were the best 5 budget SUVs in India under Rs 9 lakh. However, the equations will change once the upcoming Toyota Urban Cruiser and Kia Sonet are launched in the coming months.
