American electric car maker Tesla has launched the all-new flagship and performance-oriented variant of the Model S – the Tesla Model S Plaid. Priced at $129,990 (almost Rs. 95 lakh), the new Tesla Model S Plaid will be made in the carmaker’s production facility at Fremont, California, USA. The new variant was launched by Tesla’s CEO, Elon Musk, at an event in Fremont Gigafactory.

The new performance-oriented variant of the Tesla Model S sedan has been launched after almost a decade-long presence of the sedan in the global market. Announced for a launch back in January 2021, the new Tesla Model S Plaid was supposed to be launched on June 3rd, 2021. However, owing to constraints in the supply chain, Tesla postponed it for few days. The carmaker has officially commenced the deliveries of the Tesla Model S Plaid.

The overall visual appeal of the new Tesla Model S Plaid stays true to the standard version of the Model S four-door sedan. All the nice-looking attributes of the standard version, such as long hood, coupe-like roofline, sleek-looking all-LED headlamps and tail lamps, and wide looing air dam, have been retained for the new variant. The car rides on 19-inch wheels as standard, though customers can opt for bigger 21-inch wheels.

Tesla Model S Plaid Interior and Features

On the inside, the Tesla Model S Plaid comes with a futuristic and premium-looking cabin, with proper use of a combination of carbon fiber and wood trim for the upholstery. The interior cabin also gets a few noteworthy features like heated and ventilated front seats, full TFT instrument console, 8-inch screen for rear-seat entertainment, gaming console like unique multi-functional ‘yoke’ steering wheel, panoramic glass roof and three-zone automatic climate control.

However, the star feature of the interior cabin of the Tesla Model S Plaid continues to be the large 17-inch touchscreen infotainment system, which also houses controls for the 22-speaker audio system. The new variant also comes with a total of eight airbags and full self-drive mode as parts of the standard package.

The Tesla Model S Plaid sources its power from a pack of combination of three carbon-sleeved electric motors. This powertrain produces a maximum power output of 1020 bhp and can propel the car from 0 to 100 kmph in just 1.9 seconds, thus making it the new fastest accelerating car of the world. Elon Musk described the performance of the new Tesla Model S Plaid as ‘faster than a Porsche and safer than a Volvo’.

The Tesla Model S Plaid can reach a top speed of 322 kmph, while the maximum claimed driving range is rated at 628 km in a single charge. In addition to this, the superchargers present in the Tesla’s official charging stations across the world can quickly charge the Tesla Model S Plaid to have a driving range of 300 kms in just 15 minutes. Currently, Tesla has 25,000 charging stations with such superchargers around the world, and is on a plan of further expansion in the coming times.

The new Tesla Model S Plaid has been made available in five different color options of blue, red, grey, black and white. Alongside the launch of this new variant, Tesla also announced hikes in prices of other models in its range. In addition to it, Tesla also announced the development of Model X Plaid, which is supposed to have more or less the same performance levels as that of Tesla Model S Plaid. The new Tesla Model X Plaid is scheduled to hit the floors in early 2022.
