Maruti Suzuki Alto Bestselling Car in India 2020

No spoilers ahead. It’s none other than Maruti Suzuki Alto that is now officially the most sold car in any passenger car segment in India. Launched in the millennial year 2000, Alto earned India’s best-selling car label in 2004, just after four years of its launch. Tagged as the most affordable car in the country, Alto is known for its low maintenance aspect and value for money proposition.

Overall, 39 lakh Altos have been sold since its launch in 2000. This comes to approximately 1.50 lakh units every year!

A preferred car of the first time car buyers, Alto was one of the most popular choices for families looking for a reliable experience from their car. It was ideally a successor of the Maruti 800 but soon surpassed its ideal to become India’s most sold car. By 2008, Maruti Alto had crossed the 10 lakh sales figures.

The popularity of Alto can be gauged by the fact that it crossed 20 lakh by 2012 and 30 lakh by 2016. Meanwhile, two iterations of the Maruti Alto were developed – Alto 800 and Alto K10 – which further gave options to the buyers. It was among the first cars to become BS6 compliant in 2019.

Although, the BS6 update has resulted in discontinuation of the more powerful Alto K10. The Maruti Alto 800 continues to be in the hunt and recently got S-CNG variant. The Maruti Alto 800 CNG engine produces 40 bhp and 60 Nm, which is 7 bhp and 9 Nm lesser than its petrol counterpart.
